De Heus formulated its Global Green Goals which reflect the companies world wide sustainability ambitions.

Feed Company De Heus Animal Nutrition formulated its Global Green Goals. These goals reflect the ambitions of De Heus as an international feed company.

Responsible Feeding

De Heus introduced its Responsible Feeding Programme in 2020. A global sustainability programme designed to give the business units of De Heus tools to assess which issues are most relevant to their market. Based on their own situation these units can develop the strategies and activities to meet local sustainability expectations.

Global ambition

However, some of the challenges associated with the production of animal proteins have a broader scope. To further increase the sustainability of the industry De Heus decided the company needs a global ambition.

“During a digital Sustainability Summit in March 2021 around 200 colleagues in workshops. We discussed the ambitions that De Heus Animal Nutrition can set to increase the sustainability.” The employees looked at possibilities to further reduce the companies impact on climate and environment. Options to increase animal health and welfare were discussed. As were ways to help farmers develop their business in a more sustainable manner. This internal workshop resulted in the formulation of ambitions for the future: the so called Global Green Goals.

Global Green Goals

These ambitions aim to guide De Heus towards tackling some of the global issues the feed industry faces. During the summit ambitions on the sustainability of the raw materials, carbon footprint, the reduction of antibiotics and supporting farmers were formulated. “We believe that these issues are relevant in all our business units and deserve guidance and direction at the group level of our organization,” says the Dutch feed company.

The goals need to be achieved by 2030 at the latest. This ties the De Heus-goals in with the sustainable development goals defined by the United Nations.

In 2030, the Heus Animal Nutrition will not use antibiotics as growth promotors or as a preventive measure. Also the company stated they will not use any human critical antibiotics as defined by WHO curatively.

In 2025 all De Heus Animal Nutrition business units will use certified soy. This raw material will be in compliance with the Fefac Soy Sourcing Guidelines. Palm products will be either RSPO or obtained from suppliers with a verifiable zero deforestation policy. Furthermore, the company will offer their customers a range of more sustainable options in relevant markets.

Additionally, De Heus Animal Nutrition will start or support reforestation projects around the world to prevent the loss off valuable natural ecosystems and protect biodiversity.

CO2 footprint

In 2022 De Heus Animal Nutrition will be able to calculate, formulate and set goals for the CO2 footprint of its products. The company aims to carry out a group wide CO2 zero measurement in 2023. Based on the outcome of the group wide zero measurement, De Heuswill formulate goals and look for solutions to lower its CO2 footprint.

Furthermore, the company wants to provide customers tailored on the farm advice to reduce their own CO2 footprint.

De Heus is currently in the process of developing the indicators and policies that will help its business units to reach the Global Green Goals.
