Norwegian dairy farmers pause use of Bovaer

Norwegian milk producer Norsk Melkeråvare is temporarily suspending the use of Bovaer on dairy farms in Norway. This pause is a precautionary measure while further clarification is sought regarding some negative effects observed on some farms in Denmark.

"So far, no negative effects of Bovaer have been observed in Norway. However, as a precaution and in consultation with our researchers at MetanHUB, we are opting for a temporary pause to gather more knowledge," says Johnny Ødegård, director of Norsk Melkeråvare. "Meanwhile, MetanHUB continues to test new metane-reducing feeds, as we are convinced of their important role in climate work. We will review the use of Bovaer in January or sooner, depending on developments."

Reduction of methane emissions

Research by MetanHUB shows that Bovaer significantly reduces methane emissions in Norway, up to 25 percent, without negatively impacting milk quality or animal health. The study, involving more than 30 organizations and around 70 dairy farms, has so far saved over 1000 tons of CO₂ emissions. Ødegård emphasizes that Bovaer has been internationally evaluated for over 15 years and approved by both the Norwegian Food Safety Authority and EFSA.
