Fransen Gerrits started producing piglet feed enriched with animal meal in early November. The company has adapted its production in De Rips to process poultry meal from the poultry meat processing industry. This step follows the legalization of animal meal in animal feed since 2021 and, according to Fransen Gerrits, offers advantages for both the pigs and the pig farmers.
Positive effects on the health of piglets
The first practical experiences with the new feed are positive. Piglets take the new weaning feed well and show less stress during the transition after weaning. The animals seem calmer and show improved digestion and manure consistency. In addition, there is a decrease in ear edge necrosis and biting, which promotes animal welfare.
Improving metabolism and natural nutrition
Poultry meal contains 70% protein and has an amino acid profile that is well suited to the needs of pigs. It contributes to better energy management and metabolism due to the presence of B vitamins and minerals, according to Fransen Gerrits. By partially replacing soy, the feed becomes more varied and better attuned to the natural diet of omnivorous piglets. “This results in more 'inner peace' in the animals, which contributes to problem-free rearing,” says Jan van Haperen, head of nutrition at Fransen Gerrits.
Circular and more sustainable feed
The use of poultry meal not only makes the feed more natural, but also more circular, because part of the soy is replaced by this high-quality residual flow. This contributes to a lower CO2 footprint, which Fransen Gerrits sees as an additional advantage in their pursuit of sustainability.
Fransen Gerrits continues to investigate the impact of animal meal, with the aim of maximising the benefits for both pig farmers and the environment.
